The painting shows a sandy inlet in the Karuah River which empties into Port Stephens. A boatie is standing in the water preparing his boat . On the shore other non-powered boats are sitting among the sand and vegetation.

This structure is a heritage listed bridge in Brisbane. The huge abutments at each end were designed as toll booths having a small residence above for the toll-keeper and his family. It exhibits a distinctive Art Deco form and was first opened in 1936. The residences are no longer leased out. The bridge has been an important link between north and south Brisbane since its opening.
