Description

This painting depicts Noongar people employed by farmers within the community to clear the land for pastoral and grazing purposes. The Ballardong people were given contracts to burn and clear lands that measured up to 100 acres in size. All of the trees in the area were cut down and pushed into heaps using draft horses. As a child my parents would camp on these sites for up to six months at a time until the lands were cleared. During the night my Father would go out to each burn-off site and stoke the fires to ensure burning continued throughout the night and day. At night these spot-fires appeared as red and yellow flames in the dark.
