Inspired by the old Dutch master still-life paintings, I wanted to paint those jewel-like pomegranate seeds myself. I picked this fruit from my garden in Southern Italy, broke it open and painted it from life. It was so beautiful! Pomegranates are powerful symbols throughout many cultures, often associated with abundance, fertility and the cycle of life and death. I let the pomegranate decay and it filled with extra colour! Bright yellows and purples started to appear in the core, whilst the seeds remained perfectly unchanged. I painted the pomegranate again, with a more profound understanding of the metaphor.
