Original Artwork's Description

I have been meaning to paint this scene for a while. The inspiration comes from the Wingham Rodeo in outback NSW, Australia where I try to go every January while visiting my in-laws in a nearby town called Taree.

There is something dramatic and theatrical about the rodeo to a city slicker like me - the hats, boots and flamboyant outfits, contrasting with the solemn faces, postures and gait of the protagonists, the focus and composure against the energy and chaos of the arena. I love the stillness and tension in this picture, just before the gate opens up.

The figures and faces in this painting were a nice challenge for me, after lots of landscape and architecture work.

This painting was exhibited at the 2024 Sydney Easter Royal Arts and Crafts Show.

Artist Bio

Diana Borinski is a multi-award winning Sydney-based visual artist. Working primarily in watercolour and acrylic, Diana is known for evocative depictions of heritage architecture, coastal environments and local urban streetscapes, capturing the shifting interplay of light, colour and atmosphere that defines these places.

Diana’s work is deeply rooted in a sense of place. Much of her subject matter draws from Sydney’s Inner West and surrounding coastal regions, where she documents both the character of everyday neighbourhoods and the natural beauty of the Australian environment. Her paintings often explore the tension between permanence and change—particularly through a focus on heritage buildings and local landmarks that are increasingly vulnerable to redevelopment.

A recurring strength of Diana’s practice is her sensitivity to light, whether depicting the reflective shimmer of water, the textured surfaces of coastal rock formations, or the subtle tonal shifts across façades and streetscapes, She is particularly interested in how light animates familiar environments, transforming ordinary scenes into moments of quiet resonance.

While watercolour remains central to her practice, Diana also works across acrylic, mixed media and printmaking, allowing for experimentation with texture, layering and mark-making. Her technique ranges from finely observed detail to looser, more expressive treatments of form, revealing an ongoing exploration of composition, abstraction and visual rhythm.

Diana has been engaged in artmaking since childhood and has continued to develop her practice through independent study and short courses. After re-engaging with painting through commissioned work in 2020, she has established a growing presence within the Sydney art community. Diana is an active member and committee participant of the Drummoyne Art Society, regularly exhibiting in group shows and contributing to local arts initiatives.

Her work has been exhibited in many group exhibitions, receiving commendation and institutional interest. Diana’s paintings are held in private collections and are available through her website and online platforms, as well as through some local retail spaces in Sydney.

At the heart of Diana’s practice is a desire to create connection—between viewer and place, memory and environment. By focusing on scenes that hold emotional and cultural significance, her work resonates strongly with collectors who recognise their own experiences in the landscapes she portrays. Through her paintings, Diana offers both a record of place and an invitation to pause, observe and reconnect with the environments that shape everyday life.
