Artwork Description

With the tail of summer, the grasses grow golden and thin. Flowers peak through and the odd blackberry vine which always seem to remain green. Here, I cannot fail to see the beauty of an common scene by a roadside anywhere in the Gippsland hills. Yarrow, blackberry, tall grass and barbed wire, all blowing in a breeze - the golden colours evoke the summer.

Artist Bio

Welcome to the art of Dominica Polley. In the words of the artist:

“I have been creating art for over 40 years - my style might (loosely) be called ‘romanticized realism’. I create and surround myself with art that searches for meaning and renewal in a world filled with entropy and confusion.
Most recently I have discovered the joy of light and colour through impressionistic landscapes and my art is still evolving through this rebirth. My images are depicted through oil paint and oil pastels on canvas and paper, in the smaller scales of 8”x10” and 9”x12”. This size lends itself to the in-between spaces of a wall or room and allows for bourgeoning art collectors and those with a small budget.

A previous series of works delved into monochromatic large canvases, dealing with mythological subjects yet very real themes of grief, depression and death.

Emerging from this period, I am reminded that although life can be dark and sorrowful, there is also joy and wonder. I hope that these little landscapes can conjure in the viewer the same small points of elation they to bring to me while painting them!”

>> More about the Artist:

Dominica completed a Fine Arts degree in 1998, majoring in Photography. She has illustrated a number of children picture books, and has been featured in published collections. She has exhibited sporadically over the last 20 years whilst creating commissioned portraits and large scale commercial murals. She has created a successful faerie gift-card line, recently illustrated The Art of Touch card series, and in her spare time is writing fiction books aimed at middle-grade level.

Over her career, she has depicted a wide range of subject matter including commissioned portraits of people or animals, dog and horse studies, figurative studies, illustrations for books, real life or fantasy and spirituality, and photography. Although primarily an oil painter, she also utilizes acrylics, water colours, dry pastel, oil pastel, charcoal, and ink. She paints full-sized wall canvases as well as smaller scales, creating arresting images of realism and serenity in vibrant colours and tones. She no longer accepts commissions - however might be convinced otherwise for the right subject matter. Located in Gippsland Victoria, she spends her days writing, painting and devouring the beauty of the world.
