A Certain Slant

Where I live old houses are often knocked down and replaced with bigger, "better" places, crowding out natural spaces. I appreciate the architecture of an era when aesthetics, not just function, was taken into account and character was built into the small details of buildings.

This chimney, once a useful element of this home, was built not only for function but also with aesthetics in mind. While it is no longer functional but now "merely" aesthetic it is an integral part of the character of this old home.

I was excited a few years ago to hear that painting is a learned skill, not something you are born with. Deciding to believe this, I began learning from others and giving time to developing my creative practice. My first oil studies were done on the back of primed cardboard boxes as where I lived there were no art stores.

I work in oils and soft pastels. There is so much beauty around us if we have the eyes to see. I enjoy creating moments that will encourage people to slow down, to stop and look more closely.
