Hanging the Void is a small body of work I've been making in my studio for over a year. The title comes from the astronauts who give this name to their experience of being in space. Since I first saw the iconic photo of earthrise from the moon taken in 1968 by Bill Anders, I've been fascinated by space and astronomy, and used images taken from various space missions, the ISS and satellites as inspiration. I worked with panpastels, which are light fast, very fine oil based chalk pigments that create a rich, ultra soft surface. They're applied with a series of sponge tools and using them is more painting than drawing.
This piece was inspired by a photo taken from the Rosetta space probe, the European Space Agency's comet chaser. Rosetta beamed data back to Earth for 12 years.
