Hanging the Void is a small body of work I've been making in my studio for over a year and is a departure from my usual subject and inspiration.
The title comes from the astronauts who give this name to their experience of being in space. Since I first saw the iconic photo of Earthrise from the moon taken in 1968 by Bill Anders, I've been fascinated by our unfolding exploration of space. I used images taken from various space missions, the ISS and satellites as references.
The artworks are made with panpastels, which are light fast, very fine oil based chalk pigments that create a rich, ultra soft surface. They're applied with a series of sponge tools and using them is more painting than drawing.
This artwork was inspired by a photo of Earth taken from NASA's Juno spacecraft as it travelled towards Jupiter. Onboard was the first camera dedicated to public outreach and all photos were processed by citizen scientists. Juno has been in orbit for 8 years.
