Description

This painting is called Karlaya tjukurrpa (emu dreaming). The emus travelled south to west, ending up in Karrku where they descended into a deep hole. Red ochre rock rubbed off onto their feathers and this is how the emu got its markings. Ngaanyatjarra women still collect ochre from this special site to make medicine which is rubbed into the body to alleviate aches and pains. As Dorcas says, 'the blue circles are the emus and their babies in their nest. You can see their tracks as they walk to the waterhole in the centre and then walk back. They repeat this over and over.'
