Artwork Description

The young women are travelling around the country near Kaltukarjara (Docker River) with the older ladies. They are learning many things about where to collect special grasses and flowers and other types of bush tucker. This knowledge is recorded in the motifs and symbols which have been used in Western Desert visual culture for countless generations, and which the artists now deploy in the new medium of acrylic painting.

Artist Bio

Doreen Bennett is an artist and arts worker from Kaltukatjara (Docker River). Doreen paints important Tjukurpa (Dreaming) from around the Docker River area, often depicting minyma (women's) knowledge of the land and the bush tucker which it provides. Doreen was accepted into the Curatorial Workshop with Desart in September this year and achieved outstanding outcomes. She particularly enjoys preparing canvases and assisting artists in selecting their materials and colours.
