Artwork Description

Two Australian Magpies are captured mid-song, set against a brilliant backdrop of golden freesias. While the birds may appear simply black and white from a distance, a closer look reveals their true marvel—their feathers shimmer with a metallic, iridescent sheen of blues, greens, browns, and purples, a phenomenon known as structural colour. Rendered with meticulous, feather-by-feather detail and a masterful sense of depth between the two singers, this work is a testament to the hidden colours and dramatic beauty found in a simple, truthful garden moment.
