Unconscious Incompetence was painted as part of my series 'Grounding' painted in 2017.
It was painted during a time when life was pretty tough. My wife and I were in the midst of raising very young children, my health was not great and I was terrified I would lose my father to a battle he had with a heart condition.
The subject matter came from Girraween National Park in the Granite Belt, Queensland. The huge rock formations resonated with me and provided me with a way to express myself.
This piece was the first I painted in the series but it served more as a bridge between my previous focus on rock formations and landscape to trying another direction. I decided to try experimenting with adding a figure and playing around with light. I felt I was stumbling in the dark or in a void while I tried to take my art somewhere unchartered.
I decided to include this piece in 'Grounding' because it served such an important role in my ascent from unconscious incompetence.
This piece was selected as a finalist in the Darcy Doyle Art Prize 2017 and was subsequently awarded the Encouragement Award.
