Artwork Description

Artwork has a joyful pink background with painted gum leaves. The gum leaves represent my country of birth. From a distance the painting looks like something beautiful, a floral piece. Up close the leaves on closer inspection are written with words that highlight the double speak of our times. The words are opposites. Truth and lies. We cannot be free as long as we allow ourselves to be fed and to believe lies. Freedom and slavery a reference to George Orwell's work Nineteen Eighty-Four, sometimes I think he was only out by 40 years, twenty twenty-four. Corruption and values, a reference to the lack of values presented by corrupted political and powerful figures. Death and life, highlighting that while some fight for life, others bring only death. Love and apathy, representing that it is not hate that is the opposite of love, it is something more like indifference or apathy. Apathy is the true opposite because it is the apathy of the majority of the population that allows governments and powerful figures to commit crimes that go unpunished and with impunity.

The painting is made with thick gesso and acrylic giving it a chalky appearance.

Artist Bio

I am an artist based in Sydney. I mainly work with acrylics. I learned art as a child and teenager and took part in a few local competitions. As an adult I took a long break from art specifically painting, only drawing a few portraits here and there. I have recently returned to painting to help me process deep feelings and draw attention to important issues through art. I believe artists have a responsibility to comment on society. I wanted to put something out there that is not just more of the same. I wanted to make people think as I believe art should.

Commissions
I am open to do commissions, please send me a message. Commission requests should be on similar themes or styles to what you see on my profile and can be either in acrylic or pencil or graphite. I am not working in oils at the moment. Commissions price will be based on artwork size, but I can not paint anything bigger than 40x50 cm at this stage due to time commitments. If you want a larger artwork, the wait for the finished work will be very long so I would rather not make a commitment for larger pieces.
