Artwork Description

Woman, life, freedom at Bondi
2023

Sale is for an A3 print of the original Acrylic on Canvas painting. Limited edition of up to 25 prints.

"The Handmaid's Tale - your fiction is our reality'.

Painted from my close friend's photograph of Iranian Australian protesters at Bondi Beach in 2023, who were protesting in support of the Women Life Freedom movement in Iran. The two women were iconic in their Handmaid's Tale costumes, representing the everyday oppression women and girls in Iran and Afghanistan face. The signs held by the protesters at Bondi read "The Handmaid's Tale - your fiction is our reality', this stuck with me as a perfect symbolism of the problem of gender apartheid and the violent oppression of women in Iran. The white red and green also represent the national colours of Iran.

I have written the Romanised Persian Zan Zengadi Azadi on one of the signs held by the protester, and the English translation Woman Life Freedom on the other.

The Women Life Freedom movement is a women's equal rights movement in Iran. It is about emancipation of women from an unjust system. It is about ending gender apartheid and other unfair treatment of women and girls. If you consider yourself a feminist, then you should stand up for women's rights everywhere, especially those who are most oppressed.

The professional print is on high quality German 310 gsm etching paper.

Artist Bio

I am an artist based in Sydney. I mainly work with acrylics. I learned art as a child and teenager and took part in a few local competitions. As an adult I took a long break from art specifically painting, only drawing a few portraits here and there. I have recently returned to painting to help me process deep feelings and draw attention to important issues through art. I believe artists have a responsibility to comment on society. I wanted to put something out there that is not just more of the same. I wanted to make people think as I believe art should.

Commissions
I am open to do commissions, please send me a message. Commission requests should be on similar themes or styles to what you see on my profile and can be either in acrylic or pencil or graphite. I am not working in oils at the moment. Commissions price will be based on artwork size, but I can not paint anything bigger than 40x50 cm at this stage due to time commitments. If you want a larger artwork, the wait for the finished work will be very long so I would rather not make a commitment for larger pieces.
