During my time in New York in 2015, I was privileged to set foot in this monumental example of 20th century modern architecture. Frank Lloyd Write’s 5th Avenue masterpiece, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, has fascinated me ever since and tackling this piece with simple monochromatic paints was a joy.

The monochrome finish was inspired by the grey weather under which I visit the Guggenheim. The Manhattan snow in those winter months tends to muffle the metropolitan bustle, and the quiet of midday 5th Avenue was perfectly contrasted with the scale of the colossal structures.

I layered acrylic paints with loose palette-knife strokes and slowly developed the forms of the structure. The diagonal composition of the piece aims to causes dizziness, to mimic the spiralling gallery of the interior. I also adopted a looser, more modern, style in the creation of this piece, drawing upon my memories of the Modern Art galleries on the inside.

This is a cool and inviting spring painting of medieval buildings in the Kirchplatz of Wittenberg. The cool deep shadows cast by the surrounding buildings invites you into a cool court yard you can escape the sunny heat. The sky is deep blue with fluffy whit clouds behind the red tiled central building which is cream with 12 windows looking into the square. The adjacent building has fresh windows and is partly covered by the cool shadows. In the court yard is a large tree full of cool refreshing leaves. the colours are soft pastel with yellow and blue soft buildings with red tiled roofs. The courtyard is cobbled with ornate lamp posts. This painting captures a moment, walking along the great hall of the Great Market Hall in Budapest. You can see friends chatting as they walk, window shoppers looking at what they might buy in the stalls and others simply strolling along enjoying the atmosphere of the market. The perspective painting has a vanishing point looking towards the entrance of the market. The colours are warm browns, yellow and oranges with dark iron metal work of the market structure. The tiled floor is cream and blue and the path way through the market is lit by spherical street lamps that illuminate the walk ways. There is lots of activity and colour in each of the market shops. The inspiration for this painting was taking on a European cultural experience with my family as we were travelling Europe. It was a lovely cultural experience of shopping in Hungary and a window into Hungarian life.
