Artwork Description

Acrylic on canvas, stretched and ready to hang.

Signed on the front.

I love to paint scenes from European family holidays. This one is from a photo from Amsterdam where my brother visited with Dad in 2017. I wanted to paint it as I was drawn to the chaotic reflections created by the canal, and the way the buildings were mirrored in the water. I painted this with a pallet knife and brush using acrylic paint.

With a grey to white descending gradient, the sky acts as a backdrop to a dramatic leaning building. The rounded walls of the Guggenheim descend from larger to small, resting upon a final cubic structure which stretches to the corner of the piece.

The texture of the palette-knife-applied acrylic paint is rough, and loose, yet the angles and forms are highly accurate. The Shapes are correct but the surfaces are rough, showing quick and flowing movement from the knife. This is a cool and inviting spring painting of medieval buildings in the Kirchplatz of Wittenberg. The cool deep shadows cast by the surrounding buildings invites you into a cool court yard you can escape the sunny heat. The sky is deep blue with fluffy whit clouds behind the red tiled central building which is cream with 12 windows looking into the square. The adjacent building has fresh windows and is partly covered by the cool shadows. In the court yard is a large tree full of cool refreshing leaves. the colours are soft pastel with yellow and blue soft buildings with red tiled roofs. The courtyard is cobbled with ornate lamp posts.
