Artwork Description

In this portrait, Edward captures Emmely in a blend of quiet melancholy and awe as the last light of day settles across her skin. Her left hand rests softly against her cheek, while her right hand forms a gentle fist against her bicep—an understated gesture of resilience and strength. She holds a moment of stillness as the sky shifts from fiery orange‑red into a muted blue.

The sky becomes an enchanting presence of its own, its transition conveyed through the wispiness of Edward’s intuitive mark‑making. Emmely listens to the colours, the distant murmurs around her, and the vastness of the landscape. She becomes part of it—subtly blending into the background—while the rhythm of the brushwork keeps her presence in quiet balance with the world she’s observing.

Model: Emmely Garcia

Artist Bio

As a visual artist born and raised in Sydney, I am continually exploring how landscapes can capture, shape or deepen the narrative around each figure. My work grows from a curiosity about how people see me, how they see themselves, and how they respond to the world around them. I’m drawn to the atmosphere of a place such as the ocean, the shifting light, the way sunlight settles on skin, and I aim to translate these observations into paintings that evoke harmony, beauty, expression and an ethereal sense of presence. This emotional pull toward connection, perception and environment is what drives me to paint.

Using thin layers of oil paint, I strategically build light, shadow, form, depth and luminosity, balancing this realism with gestural marks and experimental surface effects. I often begin with a high tooth primer to create texture, then glaze over layers to heighten vibrancy and atmosphere. While I work with a realist foundation, I embrace spontaneity and the freedom to let the painting breathe, shift and reveal itself. Portraits remain central to my practice, often intertwined with landscapes or interior spaces that speak to their identity, memory and the emotional tone of a moment.

I explore how a landscape can shape a figure’s emotional presence, and how a figure can transform the meaning of a place. I’m interested in the moment of introspection that occurs when someone becomes aware of being seen, and how this awareness reveals something deeper about their inner world and the synchrony they share with their surroundings. I am inspired by artists who can capture the emotional truth of a scene and interpret it through imaginative, expressive processes, and I aspire for my own work to do the same through colour, emotional resonance and technical skill.
