If we ever needed a reminder of nature’s all-encompassing power, it’s now. The rambling terrains of Sydney-based artist Elaine Foulsham are a gentle call for us to recognise the vast and diverse natural world we persistently attempt to curate. Devoid of human representation, her layered acrylic and mixed media paintings focus on the energy transferred between nature and ourselves. The undulating terrains of open fields and coastal areas are translated with awe and sincerity onto her canvases which she paints intuitively from her garden studio. She says, ‘At times I feel a certainty for what I wish to achieve before I begin and other times I just let the image talk to me as it unfolds’. The more you gaze at Elaine’s vast landscapes, the more you get lost in their visceral energy.
Elaine Foulsham is a Sydney based contemporary landscape painter. Much motivation for Elaine has come from being an independent single woman and never marrying. She returned to art after a long break and completed a Visual Arts Diploma at the Northern Sydney Institute with distinctions in Painting and Art History & Theory. She studied in Florence, Italy at SACI (Studio Arts Centres International) and a short art study through Federation University, VIC.
Her work has been exhibited in commercial and regional galleries. She has been privately commissioned numerous times and has hosted many highly successful solo exhibitions.
Elaine’s work is a call for humanity to recognise the vast and dramatic natural world of which we, albeit small and insignificant, are the keepers.
