Artwork Description

Unflappable Starlet by Elise Judd

This painting is inspired by the Golden Age of Hollywood particularly the silent film era.  The stories of the women of that time are so inspiring and inspirational.  This particular painting is a take on the actress Faith Bacon (1910 - 1956).  Faith's life was definitely full of highs and lows.  Hers is a fascinating story to read about her career and life which came to a tragic end.

As my background in partly in Textiles, therefore I have made this piece as a wall hanging which means that it will come to you rolled in a tube with the poles and D-Rings included. (This makes the actual dimension 160cm wide.)  I have used quite a limited palette, this is to reflect the black and white films of the time and also the old sepia photos.

This piece is made in acrylic and charcoal.  It has been sealed and varnish for its protection.

Artist Bio

A visual story teller at heart, Elise creates art about women and place. Drawing inspiration from history and her surroundings the work explores nostalgia, identity and our connection to the land. Her portraits often give a voice to women whose stories were never told, revealing inner strength, beauty and quiet resilience.

A graduate from The University of Melbourne and a finalist in several art prizes, Elise blends traditional techniques with a contemporary sensibility. As she explains,
“I often like to incorporate sewing, stitching, lace and lettering in my work. Women have always helped shape the world - not always through grand gestures, but often through quiet and unseen work.”

Dividing her time between her city studio and country workspace built from repurposed materials on the site of an old cowshed, Elise’s practice is grounded in reflection, renewal and the stories that connect us all.
