Mixed Media on paper

Blue Wrens stand out from all of the other small birds in the garden, they dart about so quickly that you only manage to catch a glimpse of that electric blue of the male bird. The female is not as pretty but equally intriguing. They are so small and delicate, their little legs aren't even as thick as a match stick yet they continue to hop and fly, landing on small branches and fragile flower stems. When they visit my garden a good deal of time is taken up observing their behaviour, they love juicy green grubs they find underneath the violets, they often fly off into the Lilly Pilly hedge if they're startled.
I painted the white daisies first using white chinagraph pencils and wax pencil. The wrens were painted using watercolour and the final touches of background were painted with watercolour pencil and watercolour washes, on a background of watercolour paper on illustration board, creating an almost whimsical depiction of life in the garden. This colourful artwork would be a great choice for a space needing colour and interest.
