Ellis trained as a graphic designer and painter before being bitten by the theatre bug. This took him to Paris where he trained in physical theatre and mask work. For the next 35 years he created a visual, unique style of theatre which he performed all over the world.
Meanwhile his love of the visual arts deepened and he evolved an energetic style of painting that embodies movement and stillness. His influences have been William Turner, Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, Joan Mitchell and Cy Twombly.
He now teaches theatre in Perth, painting out of his garden studio.
Surrounded by the sounds and the wonder of nature, Ellis has plenty of material to inspire him to fill his large canvases.
