Artwork Description

A painting that was a part of a series where a particular character (the one in the detailed photo) met and interacted with youkai (or ghosts) or people pretending to be so. I am influenced by the Hyakki Yagyo ("Night Parade of One Hundred Demons") depicting strange and unbound spirits all parading together. It comes with my own little twist.
It is a light painting with the whiteness dominating the transparent nature of a lot of my characters.

Artist Bio

Emma Kidd graduated from art school (TAFE: Associate Diploma; print-making / photography) in 1994.
She had residencies in Italy (Barga / Lucca) print making, then at Studio Camnitzer where she was able to combine both her loves at the same time learning photographic multi-plate colour etching.
After various graphic designer jobs, travel, child, she found her voice again in painting. She is known for her off-beat articulated creatures and strange groupings of creatures, alot of her work is inspired by Japanese folklore and oddness. She was awarded a year long studio residency at the Creative Space in Freshwater, NSW for 2019. More exhibitions are coming soon.
