Artwork Description

This is a little hand built world that is inspired by my love for the uniqueTasmanian landscape. I use many different techniques that are intended to give the piece the atmosphere of a book illustration, in the textures, colours, shading, attention to detail and subject matter. It is designed so that the viewer is drawn in and lost for a moment.

Artist Bio

I have been lucky enough to grow up in a small Tasmanian country town surrounded by both bush and farmland, and close to the ocean and the mountains. I spent days as a child immersed in the Tasmanian landscape, and became acutely aware of its’ unique flora and fauna, it’s’ changing seasons, and the beauty to be found in petals trapped in frozen puddles, the smell of woodsmoke in the late afternoon winter sunlight, and the silhouettes of old buildings against the hills behind the Main Street.

I studied Fine Arts and obtained a BFA in 1996, majoring in Ceramics. I have spent most of my working career teaching Visual Art to high school students, which has been both challenging and rewarding. Raising a family has also been a major part of my life - having children has allowed me to appreciate this unique place all over again, as I get to experience it through their eyes.

I create little hand built worlds from clay that are inspired by my love for the Tasmanian landscape, with which I try to summon the feelings of peace, safety, comfort and nostalgia that come to mind whenever I think back to my time growing up here. I use many different techniques that are intended to give the pieces an atmosphere of a children’s book illustration, in the textures, colours, shading, attention to detail and subject matter.

I love the creative process - I learn something new every day. I love sharing my world with other people, and I hope it gives as much pleasure to look at as it does to create it.
