Blown, hot sculpted, then cold worked glass, consisting of two parts: a white 'patty pan' in which a hollow glass 'frog' can sit. The pieces are not attached but designed to sit together. Multiples available. Currently on display at Bluethumb Art Gallery Adelaide, 72A King William Road.
The Balfours ‘Frog Cake’ is a classic South Australian icon; something which has immediate connection and understanding for local people. It is rather amusing how people from SA adore the motif of the frog cake, but many would prefer not to eat them! Frog Cakes look oh-so tantalising, but are dreadfully sweet. Their popularity will never cease to amaze me, so creating a larger-than-life glass version seemed like an appropriate way to pay homage to my South Aussie roots.
