Royal pink with spotted 'seeds' inside and dark green patterning on the outside. Currently on display at Bluethumb Art Gallery Adelaide, 72A King William Road, Goodwood, SA.

Being the firstborn grandchild in 1991, I reflect on the passing years, bonding with my family, gaining siblings and cousins as I aged. Sunny weekends meant afternoon barbecues at Nana Young’s house, always ending with tasty watermelon. This turned into a ritual for us kids, who were sent outside to eat on the grass; the adults being exempt from this rule. Even after the turn of the century, I still sat in the backyard with my younger Young family members to munch on our slices of fresh fruit, experiencing our quintessential childhood rite of passage.

My 'Watermelon' series of work challenges me to be inventive, versatile and learn new techniques with each new imagination of the recognisable motif.
