I was inspired to paint this image after a visit to Scotland. I was driving to Avie Moore in the highlands and came across a bridge and river. This image was taken when standing on once side of the river looking across to the other side. There was fresh snow on the ground. I particularly like the thistle plant in the foreground that is dormant in winter. The contrast of light and dark and reflection in the water in the winter landscape was also key to this piece.
I live and work in Brisbane Queensland. I was born in Emerald in Central Queensland. During my childhood I was introduced to art and painting by family friend and artist Lee Kempson. While I was originally self-taught, I am now fortunate to be mentored by local and international artist Alan Morrison. I work mainly in acrylic on canvas, and I prefer to work on large canvases. I enjoy painting landscapes and seascapes often of locations I have been to or that have special meaning to me; even sometimes in my own back yard to convey the connections to nature in your own space. Over time I have moved from photorealism to a looser style in the search for a more individual style. I particularly like to capture light and reflection in my artwork. Painting brings me peace and focus. I work as a Registered Nurse in the community with women who have been in prison. My art provides me with a space to reflect. I embrace all that is wonderful in nature and being outdoors is both grounding and inspirational. I endeavour to pass on the same appreciation of nature in my artwork - be that in bush walking, gardening or on your own unit balcony - any space that creates a sense of belonging and tranquillity.
