Artwork Description

I love to swim at North Narrabeen Rock Pool which is next to where the ocean enters a lagoon. The water flows over the rocks and is one of the more peaceful things to watch.

Lagoon is an expressive abstract landscape. Layers of turquoise, aqua and green flow into rich rust, burnt orange and earthy brown, creating a sense of depth and movement.

Gestural marks, energetic lines and vivid bursts of coral and magenta move across the surface, suggesting reflections, vegetation and the organic rhythms of a landscape in constant change.

Artist Bio

Erin Hourigan is a self-taught Australian artist based on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Her contemporary abstract landscapes are inspired by the bushland, coastline and waterways of the places she knows and walks through.

Working primarily in acrylic and mixed media, Erin responds to the colours, textures and changing rhythms of the Australian landscape. Her paintings move between observation and abstraction, using expressive mark-making and layered surfaces to evoke the experience of being immersed in a particular place.

Recent work explores the rugged bushland of Muogamarra Nature Reserve and the coastline around Narrabeen, reflecting an ongoing interest in the natural environments surrounding Sydney.

Alongside her art practice, Erin works as a lawyer.
