A NEW DIRECTION is an abstract painting that was inspired by the artist Paul Klee’s statement that ‘a line is a dot that went for a walk’. Here the ‘dot’ has gone for quite an extensive walk forming shapes within contour lines along the way. The shapes were then infused with pastel colours on top of more vivid colours. The palette of mostly complementary colours has not only filled in the shapes that were created by the ‘line going for a walk’ but individual colours have also been layered on top of each to form shapes within shapes. The upper layers of paint don’t fully cover every shape from edge to edge, thus allowing glimpses of colours that were applied in the layers underneath. This layering has created the shapes within shapes and evolved into an abstract version of a topographic map.
