Dynastes tityus, the eastern Hercules beetle, is a species of rhinoceros beetle native to the Eastern United States. It is the largest beetle found in this part of the world.
Like its namesake, the Hercules beetle is a crazy strong critter, and impressively large. Its size has earned it nicknames like the elephant beetle and the ox beetle. The whole animal, including the male's horns, may reach 60 mm in length.
Despite its size and considerable heft, these beetles can fly surprisingly. They have well-built wings and sturdy elytra to thank for that.
