Gabriela Villalba is a Venezuelan-born photographer and graphic designer who has been based in Sydney since 2013. Her photographic journey began during her university years when she borrowed a camera from her brother, sparking a career focused on documentary portraiture and creative artistic approaches. Her lens has captured the vibrant creative spirit of Sydney's Northern Beaches.
During the 2020 lockdowns, Gabby immersed herself in self-portrait photography and began experimenting with cyanotype, a 19th-century photographic technique. This period allowed her to explore the physical and emotional aspects of identity while strengthening her commitment to sustainability and environmental awareness in her art.
Gabby’s current projects often involve merging real elements with photography, creating collages, and utilising less toxic photographic processes. Her work invites viewers to reflect on self-awareness and our connection to the environment. She has received recognition in various art prizes, including being a finalist in the Northern Beaches Environmental Art & Design Prize 2024.
