A study for the larger work 'Cathedral on the hill', the title of this work, and the name of the ship is, in latin, the 'Dance of Time' - the new and the old coming face to face in the port of Newcastle.

Born in Melbourne, but now resident in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales, Gavin Fry has returned to painting in retirement after a fifty-year career as a museum curator and director. He has written twenty-five books and major catalogues on Australian art and artists. The themes he works on relate to his previous work, especially as Senior Curator of Art at the Australian War Memorial, Deputy Director of the Australian National Maritime Museum and Director of Newcastle Museum.
