Gayan is an artist living in Melbourne, Australia. Born into a family of artistic atmosphere in 1976, Gayan initiated drawing when he was only a 4-year old boy. Inheriting his father, who is a well-known artist Ediwn Batawala, Gayan’s talent turned up at a very young age. After he consecutively finished his study in Fine Arts College, he was well-prepared to be a professional artist.
However, being an artist is not a paved way for Gayan. He is a UX designer for 10 years in Melbourne. During this period Gayan had produced lots of artworks. It is after his settling down in Melbourne in 2008, that Gayan began to focus on painting.
What drives him to paint with watercolour is an FAQ. Transparent watercolour is a material that is truly difficult to control. What is exciting for him is to apply the quasi-super-realistic technique to experiment the possibility of watercolour in depicting the subject’s innermost being.
Gayan is an enthusiastic watercolourist with the very keen sense of colours, which was initially fully reflected in his oil paintings. He also stands out for his high techniques applied in oil paintings and watercolour paintings, especially in portraits. He vividly captures the characteristics and nature of his subjects. His paintings not only witness his exquisite techniques and colouring skills, but also the deep influence of classical art upon him.
