Artwork Description

The work grew from my interest in the unseen rhythms that surround us — vibration, frequency and energy translated into physical form - in this instance cholorophyll. Rather than weaving a dense, traditional tapestry, I deliberately left the warp exposed, allowing the fine mohair to trace movement across the surface. The result sits somewhere between structure and spontaneity: a moment of movement made visible. I like to leave the interpretation open, in essence it could reference a bowl of matcha, rolling fields or a creeping house plant...

Artist Bio

Gemma Rubina Sarmiento is a Bendigo-based, self-taught textile artist whose practice explores vibration, rhythm and energy through woven and stitched form. Drawing on a background in health science, her work is informed by a deep understanding of the relationship between the body, the senses and environment, translating unseen subtleties into tactile abstract compositions. Through intuitive material processes, Gemma investigates resonance, flow and restoration through sensation and perception by interpreting traditional textile techniques with fresh appeal.
