Artwork Description

This painting celebrates the sculptural beauty of Australian native flora, featuring gum blossoms, curling eucalyptus leaves and vibrant kangaroo paw. The bouquet bursts energetically from a richly patterned ceramic jug, each element painted with expressive colour and playful detail. The curved gum leaves twist and flow around the composition, while the bright red kangaroo paw flowers rise confidently through the arrangement, creating a lively sense of movement.

My work is inspired by the natural world surrounding me in the Blue Mountains, where native plants offer endlessly fascinating shapes, colours and textures. I am drawn to the character of Australian flora — their unusual forms, resilience and quiet beauty — and I interpret them through bold colour, layered pattern and expressive brushwork.

The decorative jug and geometric background patterns echo the shapes within the foliage, creating a rhythmic conversation between the natural and the handmade. Rich blues, pinks, greens and oranges give the piece warmth and vibrancy, transforming a simple still life into something joyful and celebratory.

Designed to lift a space, this artwork brings colour, energy and personality to a room, while honouring the unique beauty of Australia’s native landscape.

Materials: Acrylic paint on canvas, built through layered brushwork and hand-painted patterning to create texture, depth and vibrant colour throughout the composition.

Artist Bio

Genevieve Clay-Smith is a filmmaker and visual artist based in the Blue Mountains. By day she works as a film director and screenwriter; by night she paints vivid, spontaneous abstracts and expressionistic still lifes inspired by the colours, textures and quiet beauty of her mountain home. Her joyful works transform everyday scenes—tea cups, vases of flowers, familiar corners—into playful explorations of pattern and colour. Drawing from fauvism and folk art, Genevieve’s paintings move beyond realism to celebrate life’s simple pleasures.
