The work is based on realism but with a distortion factor – a kind of sub-surrealism – exploring aspects of the ordinary and the extraordinary and seeking to evoke a sense of the social dynamics and the psychological paradigms of identity and place.
Placing the figure in a composition is one of the great pursuits of artists throughout art history. Maintaining the aesthetic focus and integrity of the subject within its compositional environment often poses difficulty and as a result the surrounding space may be subdued or negated. I have endeavoured to enrich the space without subverting the essential study of the figure and to examine the accumulated shapes and shadows of the built environment and the patterns and forms of our constructed world.
