Artwork Description

"Learning the Trade" captures the serene beauty of a Mediterranean coastal scene in the late afternoon, at the end of a day's fishing. The artwork depicts a vivid blue boat moored at a dock, in front of which a fisherman is engaged in teaching a child the art of repairing nets. The scene highlights the labour associated with the fishing industry. One easily senses the personal relationship between the older man and the child. Several sailboats are to be seen in the calm, blue waters in the background. The clear skies and subtle hues of blue add to the tranquillity of the scene.

Artist Bio

Gérard was born and raised in the quaint seaside town of Séte, on France's mesmerizing Mediterranean coast. His work stands out for its classical elegance, technical skill, and a keen eye for illusion.
Gérard mostly paints in oils, sometimes exploring acrylics and mixed media to bring his ideas to life. He honours traditional, representational art but always adds his own modern twist, especially with his love for trompe l’oeil.
Influenced by the bright Mediterranean light, the ever-changing sea, and the beauty found in small, everyday details, Gérard’s paintings invite viewers into scenes that feel both graceful and captivating.
He combines careful planning—like sketching, taking photos, and working digitally—with a willingness to follow his instincts as he layers his canvases. Every brushstroke shows his dedication to craft and authenticity.
Gérard’s art appeals to collectors who appreciate timeless themes, a sense of atmosphere, and the lasting allure of great technique
