Artist’s Statement
There is not a time in my life when I haven’t been either painting or drawing, or creating in some way or other.
I was born in Germany and trained as a bookseller, then came to Australia and lived for most of my life on a farm in North-West NSW. Art had to fit it in with work, study and family life.
Wide horizons soon cast their spell and I consider the black soil plains my true home which I love to paint.
I paint mainly landscapes and sometimes portraits, either in oil or pastels. I enjoy the immediacy of pastels, which I like to push around like paint and the squishiness of oils. Other media provide variety and stimulation.
My subjects come from the places where I’ve lived, mostly around Wee Waa (magic country), but I also like to remember ‘wo de Nordseewellen trekken an de Strand, wo de gelen Blomen bleun int gröne Land‘. Especially when the outside temperature here reaches 40...
I have no great desire to set the world aflame, I get great satisfaction from the ordinary sights around me and I’m happy with those.
