This is the first in the abstract and chinese calligraphy series. Completed in 2002 this piece explores the relationship between a very strongly coloured abstract painting with the more gentle ink calligraphy.
Living in Sydney at that time, somehow I was feeling trapped in a job that I didn't quite like and was feeling a need to break the boundaries over my life and begin to 'run free', as in changing jobs or industry. What finally transpired was that I applied to work in a foreign country and landed in Taiwan where I spent a year working.
All that pent up energy found its way onto the drawing board with the paints applied quickly with a spatula.
The chinese calligraphy is from 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 which is a well known passage which can be summarized as 'Love is Patient and never fails'. Which was far from what I was feeling at that time but became a sort of mojo to cling on to.
