Sargasso

I really wanted to make an environmental statement with this painting so I painted the fish bones at the bottom of the painting and the townscapes near the top. In between the black and white layer of discarded objects symbolising the dramatic effect our lifestyle is having on the marine environment but I still wanted to make an attractive painting in spite of the serious subject. The title of the painting is from the great garbage patches in the Atlantic Ocean know as the Sargasso Sea. Stylistically I think this one owes a fair bit to Paul Klee (-:

Graeme Whittle is a multi-award winning Australian artist, specialising in oils, watercolour and contemporary drawing. Currently living and working in Tasmania, Graeme has won a number of awards including the Tasmanian Art Award, Best Watercolour in the Burnie Art Prize and has been a five times finalist in the Glover Art Prize, Tasmania's premier art award. More recently he was awarded People's Prize at the prestigious Bay of Fires Art Award.

Graeme has a diploma of fine art from the University of Tasmania and has been represented across Australia and on the international stage.
