Finnie is the next in my reform series. The subject matter for this series is architecture and streetscapes from in and around the inner west of Sydney. The creative process involves me wandering around some of my favourite neighbourhoods looking for interesting structural designs. (tough job right?). I then return to my studio and attempt to recreate the subject matter from memory or a loose sketch. Along the way I construct, deconstruct, modify, and re-wok the design. Often there are only glimmers of the source subject matter. I also apply a cubist logic to the artworks, so that the painting may have more than one perspective. Overall I always strive to achieve a sense of balance, contradiction, authenticity and generally a painting which is pleasing and interesting to look at.
I take my inspiration from artists such as Diebenkorn, Rothko, and Mondrain. The gentle composition and bold vibrant colourfield style.
The artwork has been continued over the sides of the canvas which means it can remain without a frame. The painting has been finished off with several layers of matte finish, which creates a gentle and subdued finish. The matte finish really suits this style of artwork, as well as protecting from UV rays and dust.
