About

My name is Gregory Matthews, I am a proud Tasmanian Aboriginal Man (Peerapper) I am descended from the Manegin People of the North West Nation, my ancestors occupied the Arthur River Mouth area of Tasmania's North West Coast.

During my early childhood I was looked after by by my Grandparents and sometimes by my Mother who lived interstate. Welfare; stepped in one day, separating me from my family. I was placed in care, and had spent a considerable amount of time in boys' homes in both Tasmania and Melbourne; eventually being adopted in Melbourne at the age of 12.

My Mother finally shared our aboriginal heritage with her children, as she had been taught never to admit being aboriginal. She told us it was considered to be shameful, and never to be discussed.

I was so proud that my siblings, children, and I were welcomed into the Tasmanian Aboriginal Community by the Manegin Aboriginal Elders.

Discovering my Aboriginal Heritage was the catalyst to fulfil my life long art ambitions; In 2016 I was accepted into a local Aboriginal Art & Yarn Group, In mid 2018 I became involved in the Baluk Arts Group Mornington, Bunyip Project, and through them I have Exhibited two of my works at the Frankston Arts Centre.

My paintings; and on-going research, are reconnecting me with my ancestors' history & culture, which is so important to me and my family.

All paintings are produced by me, they are original; and are supplied with a signed Certificate that incorporates both a Statutory Declaration of my Aboriginal Heritage, and a Certificate of Authenticity for the purchased painting.

I would be pleased to accept commissions to suit your particular requirements and/or decor.
