Bloodwood Hideaway (Bonnie Doone)

This painting is inspired by the landscape at the Bloodwood Cabin in the Upper Burnett region of Queensland. It is heavily textured, with traces of underpainting layers that are an integral part of the painting's history and a tangible connection to the whispered secrets and stories of the surrounding bushland. It is an oil on canvas, finished with a gloss varnish and white edges intentionally left uneven and with paint spills to enhance the visual impact. The nickname was first used by my uncle when I was a youth. The years of that young stockman and dozer driver are now a distant memory.

I was born in country Queensland and spent my early childhood on a cattle property situated along the Nogo River. As a child, I would often go out into the paddocks with my father and I've felt a strong connection to that landscape ever since.

I'm a mainly self-taught artist working in oils. I now paint as ‘Greybeard,’ exploring that harsh country that is so familiar to me. The sands of the Nogo and the black ironbarks of the surrounding expanse carry a strong sense of place and personal identity.
