Westie (The Road Paddock)

This painting is an interpretation of the country near Abercorn in the Upper Burnett region of Queensland. The open forest terrain rises to Barram Road, which follows the ridge's summit, and features a striking bottle tree at the boundary fence. This tree is a local landmark known as 'Westie' because of the word 'Wests' that is carved into its trunk. It is an oil on canvas and is finished with a gloss varnish for lasting protection. The white edges are intentionally left uneven, with real and simulated paint spills that enhance its visual interest. It is signed, ready to hang, and will bring the captivating allure of the Australian outback into your home.

The nickname was first used by my uncle when I was a youth. The years of that young stockman and dozer driver are now a distant memory.

I was born in country Queensland and spent my early childhood on a cattle property situated along the Nogo River. I now paint as ‘Greybeard,’ exploring that harsh country that is so familiar to me. The sands of the Nogo and the black ironbarks of the surrounding expanse carry a strong sense of place and personal identity.
