The transition from sail to steam didn’t always result in a good looking design but I think the sloop HMAS Fantome was an elegant exception. Built in 1901 she was transferred from the Royal Navy to the Royal Australian Navy in 1914 for use as an armed patrol boat in waters to the north of Australia. She didn’t see much action but her captain was a harsh disciplinarian that resulted in a couple of mutinies- interesting stuff. Her name “Fantome” is also French for ghost so I have titled my painting “The White Ghost”.
