Garden Stillness

This watercolour painting was inspired by roses freshly picked from my garden. Their colours—rich purples and soft peach—caught the morning light beautifully, and I wanted to capture that fleeting moment of calm. Using gentle washes and transparent layers, I aimed to reflect the softness and delicacy of the blooms, as well as the clarity of the glass vase that holds them.

Hanbing Lu was born and raised in Shanghai, immigrating to Australia in 2014 where she now lives in Rockhampton as a visual artist and university lecturer. Lu’s artistic education included Western art from a young age, while Chinese traditional art, religion, philosophy, and cultural history have also influenced her, becoming a subconscious element in her creative process. Engaging in diverse practices such as oil painting, Chinese calligraphy and watercolour, Lu explores a blend of techniques coupled with inspiration drawn from the natural beauty of Central Queensland and the diverse cultural influences of the region.
