The more that I think about the story of Medusa, it seems to be representative of a lot of the demonisation of women throughout history. Different versions tell her story as being either cursed or blessed with the power to turn men to stone with a look. As someone who was pursued relentlessly for her beauty, she then became hunted as a monster, just for being who she was.
I wanted to show Medusa as an innocent, who truly just wanted solitude and to exist, and this shows her snakes as protecting her from the dangers of humanity.
This piece is my second artwork exploring myths and legends from different cultures, and showing the strength of unconventional women who were seen as outcasts, pariahs or even monsters.
