As part of my residency at The Acres during 2023/2024, I drew in my sketchbook every week for many months. I mainly drew flowers in ink with crayons to indicate colour. This rich source of observational material has led to a series of floral paintings painted in the studio.
Zinnias were the only flowers which survived the Queensland summer weather of heat and rain. They were the most vivid colours and at times didnt look real. I loved the flashy splash of pink, orange, red and lime greens. I took copious photos and made many drawings. The zinnias personified summer at The Acres, covered in bees, butterflies and dragonflies.
