What inspired me to paint this?
Red Point at Pardoo Station is one of my favourite beaches in the Pilbara, nothing beats a lazy afternoon fishing with a cold beer. As sunset approaches, the sky on the horizon turns a vivid mix of oranges and the red rocks on the sand dunes light up like fire. In this painting, I wanted to convey the sense of wide open space so I deliberately picked this long composition with two-thirds of the painting sky. I also used a looser style when I drew the sea lapping the shore and because of this, I didn’t blend any of the soft pastels together. As a result, the sea looks like it mirrors the sky’s sunset colours which are illuminated further by the dark shadows of the waves and beach.
