100 Project: Meditations on a Fragile Planet
The 100 Project is a series of 100 textile works through which I reflect upon the natural environment and the impact of climate change. The works are delicate and domestic in scale, reflecting how I experience the environment and collect natural imagery used in the work. These were collected while walking around my neighbourhood.
The series has recurring imagery and symbols, such as a cross built from 9 squares. The cross is both an internationally recognised symbol for aid/rescue and one of the most basic quilt block patterns.
The 100 project is a work in progress. Various works in different sizes are being created and will be posted when completed. The larger works are framed in 60 cm circular quilting hoops, and the smaller works are framed in 22 cm embroidery hoops.

How the works are made.
Each piece in the series is a textile collage combining multiple layers of fabric. The botanical imagery is created by placing leaves and flowers on the scanner's flatbed glass. Each image is made using a variety of hand-drawn textures and coloured paper stencils and printed on the same image sheet multiple times.
The next stage is to design and construct a fabric collage using the printed botanical images and a range of other hand-printed fabrics. The separate sections are heat-fused together.
Then, the works are heavily free-motion embroidered using a domestic sewing machine to create a delicate multi-layered work.
The works are framed with a Nurge embroidery hoop made from hard beechwood, which has been fine sanded and hand polished to a smooth natural wood finish.
