Artist Bio

Originally from Ireland, Hilary O’Neill studied fine arts & graphic design in Belfast, London and in Berlin. Through her interest in human expression and form, she has developed an extensive portfolio, specialising in portraiture. She has worked as a scenic artist at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and in various large theatres throughout the world. She lived for many years in Germany, where she was employed as a graphic designer both in advertising and publishing houses. In the 1970’s, Hilary established Gallery Scigala in West Berlin, which showcased a variety of artist’s work including her own. As a member of the Union of Professional Artists, Hilary also painted many portrait commissions. Her portraiture has been exhibited in various Galleries across Europe. Parallel to her painting career, she also studied singing and has worked internationally as a concert artist. Her artistic achievements have led her to develop a diverse repertoire, drawing on a range of influences and cultural backgrounds, both in her visual and performing arts careers.

After immigrating to Australia in the 1980s, Hilary taught painting both privately and at various tertiary institutions. She also worked as a concert artist and sang for the State Opera Company of South Australia. In early 2000, Hilary moved back to Berlin where she toured extensively throughout Germany and Switzerland, endearing audiences with her one-woman shows and accompanying herself with the Celtic harp. She has continued to paint throughout her successful performing career, receiving further portrait commissions and exhibiting in both Europe and Australia. Now permanently based in Noosa, Queensland, she has just released her first book, ‘Travels with My Harp.’
